RIP Colonel Sonam Wangchuk | The Lion of Ladakh Passes Away

India has lost a true legend. Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd), the "Lion of Ladakh" and a decorated Kargil War hero, passed away on April 10, 2026, at age 61.

Awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), Colonel Wangchuk is remembered for his incredible bravery during Operation Vijay in 1999. He led his team at a freezing 18,000 feet to capture a strategic ridge in the Batalik Sector, successfully fighting off an enemy ambush.

The Indian Army and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have paid rich tributes to this "Son of Ladakh" whose courage will inspire generations. His final rites will be held in Ladakh according to Buddhist customs.
